A 61-year-old man, identified as David A. Hochberg, has died after a 27-foot boat crashed into a rock jetty near Picnic Island Park in Tampa Bay, Florida, on Saturday.
According to authorities, both people aboard the vessel were thrown into the water when the boat struck the rocky structure while traveling through Tampa Bay.
Emergency responders pulled Hochberg from the water, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The second person aboard survived the crash and was able to swim to shore. The survivor was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Authorities have not released an update on the person’s current condition.
Officials have not yet determined what caused the boat to strike the jetty. Investigators are expected to examine whether factors such as speed, weather conditions or a possible mechanical issue contributed to the crash.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is leading the investigation with assistance from the Tampa Police Department.
The circumstances surrounding the deadly boating accident remain under investigation.
