Jani Lane, the former lead vocalist and songwriter of the rock band Warrant, died on August 11, 2011, at the age of 47. Lane was found dead in a hotel room in Woodland Hills, California.
Born John Kennedy Oswald on February 1, 1964, in Akron, Ohio, Lane became one of the recognizable voices of the 1980s and early 1990s glam-metal scene. He joined Warrant in the 1980s and helped lead the band to major commercial success.
Lane wrote and performed some of Warrant’s most memorable songs, including “Heaven,” “Down Boys,” and “Cherry Pie.” Warrant’s first two albums, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich and Cherry Pie, established the group as one of the prominent bands of the era.

Lane’s songwriting played an important role in Warrant’s success. His work on “Heaven” demonstrated a softer side of the band’s sound, while “Cherry Pie” became one of the defining songs associated with the hair-metal era.
He had an on-and-off relationship with Warrant over the years, leaving and later returning to the band several times. His final departure came in 2008.
Beyond Warrant, Lane also worked with Saints of the Underground, a hard-rock supergroup that released the album Love the Sin, Hate the Sinner in 2008.
Jani Lane Cause of Death
Lane’s initial autopsy did not immediately establish a cause of death. Later toxicology findings determined that he died from acute ethanol intoxication, or alcohol poisoning.
His death shocked fans and fellow musicians, who remembered him for his distinctive voice, songwriting ability, and contribution to the rock music scene.
