A 13-year-old boy is in police custody in Ohio after allegedly shooting his father at a home in Michigan on Tuesday evening before fleeing the area in an SUV with the family dog.
According to Detroit police, the shooting followed what authorities described as an instance of discipline involving the teenager. Investigators allege that the boy became upset after his father returned home and subsequently shot him twice.
Detroit Police Commander Dietrich Lever said the father was struck in the back during the shooting.
The victim survived the incident and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not indicated that his injuries are life-threatening.
Teen Allegedly Fled Michigan After Shooting
Following the shooting, the 13-year-old allegedly left the Michigan home in an SUV. The family dog was reportedly also inside the vehicle.
Police eventually located the teenager in Ohio, where he was taken into custody. Another person who was reportedly traveling in the vehicle was also located by authorities.
Detroit police are now working with Ohio authorities regarding the process of bringing the teenager and the other passenger back to Michigan.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting, including what occurred during the reported disciplinary incident and what happened immediately afterward.
Because the suspect is 13 years old, additional information about his identity and the legal proceedings may be restricted because of his age.
The father’s survival has provided some relief amid an otherwise disturbing incident, while investigators continue working to establish the complete sequence of events.
